Customer FAQs

Why should I buy music from Indmill?

You get great value music, safe in the knowledge that you’re fully supporting the artists who make it and the charities they care about.

Why are you selling music so cheaply?

Because there’s no need for digital music to be expensive any more.

Is it legal?

Yes. If we get reports of material which infringes on someone else's copyright for sale on the site we will remove it immediately and, if necessary, pass on all details we have of those responsible to the authorities. We are here to sell music on behalf of our legitimate artists, not make money for copyright thieves. If you are the first person to report an illegal download we will give you a free album download.

How much does it cost to buy music from Indmill?

We currently charge £1.22 per album and 44p per single (including VAT) to customers in the UK and $1.70 per album and 70¢ per single to customers in the USA. Our prices may change in the future. We also charge a transaction fee when you pay by card or PayPal.

What is the transaction fee and who sets it?

The transaction fees vary depending on whether you’re paying by card or PayPal, which country you’re buying music from and how much you’re spending. We set these fees and aim to keep them as low as possible to just cover our costs of processing each transaction. They currently start at 28p if you wanted to purchase a single by PayPal in the UK, or 20¢ if you wanted to purchase a single by card from the United States. As Indmill grows we should be able to make them lower still. We will not make any money on them. Any profits left from transaction fees will be donated to Indmill charities.

How can I save money on purchases?

If you plan to shop at Indmill often, you can save money by topping up your Indmill wallet. You will only be charged a transaction fee when you top up, leaving you free to spend on music and nothing else.

Can I buy Indmill music for my friends?

Yes. You can buy downloads as gifts for friends. Any gifts you buy will appear on your dashboard under the heading “Unsent gifts”. You can then select recipients’ email addresses and we’ll send them a link in their email so they can download the music at their convenience.

Once I have paid for my music, how do I download it or send it as a gift?

Music you have bought will appear on the dashboard of your sign-in area under the heading “Available downloads”. Once you begin a download you will have 24 hours to complete it before the link expires. If you have a problem after this then contact us at admin@indmill.com.

Who gets the money?

The artists get 90% of the sale price (excluding VAT on EU sales), although they may choose to donate a percentage of this to a chosen charity.

Why do you give money to charity?

By giving a 5% cut from our 10% share of every sale, we hope to help build a new, ethical record market. We also ask our artists to donate the same 5% of their share. You can tell those that are giving 5% and above to charity by the badge like this next to their music.

Do I have to give money to charity?

No, but we’d love it if you added at least 5% to the cost of your purchase as a voluntary donation to charity. We will round up the value of this percentage to the nearest penny or cent. You can choose which charity to support from our list. If everyone gives 5% then around 10% of the price of each download will go to good causes.

Which charities get the money?

We have made a selection of charities available for donation, but if you know of a worthy cause that isn’t featured, then please let us know and we’ll do our best to make it an option so that everyone can donate.

Why are you selling music at 256 and 320Kbps?

The higher the bitrate, the closer the music sounds to what the artist actually recorded. 128Kbps sounds fine through a personal stereo, but doesn’t really cut it through decent speakers. Yes, it makes the files larger, and they take longer to download, but we think it’s worth the wait. Our artists choose which of the two bit rates they want to use before they upload their music.

Why do some of the downloads say “Not Available in Your Region”?

Because the download contains a cover version that isn’t licensed for sale in the United States. Don’t blame us, we’d love to offer it. Blame Songfile, the American organisation that licenses cover versions, for making it so complicated to allocate monies to songwriters and publishers in the States. We are trying to solve this problem but we can currently only sell cover versions in the UK (MPCS-PRS, the UK collecting organisation, makes it nice and easy).

Can I download my purchases more than once?

After you have initiated your download, you have a 24 hour time slot to complete the download. If you have a problem after this contact us via admin@indmill.com.

Can I copy Indmill music for my friends?

Technically, yes. There is no DRM (Digital Rights Management) on Indmill MP3s so you could, if you were feeling particularly unscrupulous, copy Indmill music for your friends for free. At these prices we’d rather you did the decent thing for the artists’ sake and buy the records you want to listen to and send them to your friends using Indmill’s gift system, so that the same artists can keep producing the tunes you’re desperate to share.
