Charities FAQ

Why did you set up Indmill?

To provide musicians with a new, convenient way of selling their music attractively priced to a marketplace used to ‘sharing’ music.

Is Indmill an illegal download site?

No. If we get reports of illegal copyrighted material for sale on the site we will remove it immediately and, if necessary, pass on all details we have of those responsible to the authorities. We are here sell music on behalf of our legitimate artists, not make money for copyright thieves.

How are you selling music so cheaply?

Because there’s no need for digital music to be expensive any more. Indmill artists still will get about as much per sale as they would have got the traditional way through a record company, because we take such a small cut. They could well sell more, thanks to our bargain prices.

Why should I register my charity on Indmill?

It’s free and gives the Indmill community of musicians and music fans a chance to donate to your charity while downloading great music. There are no running costs payable by you and Indmill will cover the cost of paying your charity by BACS every month.

How will our charity benefit from being on Indmill?

We take a 10% cut (excl VAT on EU sales) from every sale through our site and promise to give 5% of this to the charity chosen by the artist (ie 0.5% of the unit price). Artists can also opt to give a share to that charity. We suggest the same 5%, too, but they can choose the donation. Customers are also encouraged to add an optional 5% donation to a charity of their choice at the checkout, though they can give more (up to 100%) or less if they wish. If all agree, then we hope that around 10% of all revenue will go to good causes in a unique and democratic way.

How will customers know how much is being donated?

The percentage charity donation for each download is clearly shown to customers as they shop and again at the checkout.

How will charities know how much is being donated?

You will have your own sign-in area where you will be able to see the most recent donations as well as the reports of previous months’ donations.

When will our charity receive the donations?

Every month. We will email you a report detailing donations to your charity and transfer them into your nominated bank account within 30 days of the end of the month. There is an unavoidable delay in clearing the funds to combat card fraud.

Can any charity join?

Yes, provided you are properly registered with the relevant organisation, e.g. with the Charity Commission in the UK.

Will there be a formal agreement in place?

Yes, we have had an agreement drawn up by our lawyers. If you email us at charity@indmill.com we will send a copy for your inspection.

What do we do next?

If you are happy with the agreement, send a signed copy back to us and we will create a username and password and send this to you. You can use this unique sign-in to view live donations in the month-to-date as well as reports of donations in previous months.

What do we need to do to raise money through Indmill?

Very little. We just require a signed copy of the agreement and the charity’s bank details in order to transfer donations to you every month. We will do the rest, by including your charity in the list of those available for our artists and customers to donate to.

What if we change our minds and don’t wish to be associated with Indmill?

You may terminate our relationship at any time. We ask for two working days to process this and will, of course, pay you any money raised up until that point.
